Bikes Together Executive Director

Bikes Together is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes equitable access to bikes and bike education through a variety of recycling and education programs and a social enterprise retail shop in Denver, Colorado since 2008.

Bikes Together is excited to meet our next Executive Director! This person will be community-focused, operationally-oriented, and moved to make bicycle transportation, recreation and mechanics accessible to people who are usually excluded because of race, class, and/or gender. The Executive Director will oversee budgeting, fundraising, staff, strategy, and overall smooth operations of the social enterprise. This individual will be supported by an active board and long-standing staff in our collective efforts to grow capacity, build a leader-full organization, prioritize equity and transparency, and deepen our impact.

This is a FTE position (40 hours/week) and reports to the board of directors.

Bikes Together is currently staffed by an Interim Director, full-time Retail Coordinator, part-time Service Coordinator, part-time Programs Manager, and full-time Retail Bike Mechanic. Current employees work as a team with an education focus and are excited to welcome our next collaborative leader. The current 9-person board of directors includes long-time volunteers, mechanics, instructors, and community advocates, and is majority trans/womxn/intersex/genderqueer (TWIG) and 25% members of color. Areas of Responsibility

Development and Fundraising (40%)

  • Ensure Bikes Together meets annual fundraising goals
  • Create and manage fundraising plan including:
  • Individual donor stewardship, solicitations, campaigns, and fundraising events
  • Grant management, writing, prospecting, and reporting
  • Chair Development Committee

Staff Support and Human Resources (20%)

  • Build culture of trust and camaraderie; relationship-building
  • Supervise all managers and direct reports including regular communication, goal-setting and evaluation, and supporting personal and professional growth
  • Chair the Human Resources Committee
  • Oversee hiring/firing and onboarding/offboarding of all direct reports
  • Maintain consistent, transparent and equitable HR processes organization-wide
  • Manage employee pay and benefits
  • Conflict transformation

Finance & Budgeting (15%)

  • Create and oversee annual budget
  • Work closely with contract bookkeeper, Board Treasurer and (future) Finance Committee
  • Ensure nonprofit and tax compliance

Board Management and Strategic Planning (10%)

  • Guide overall strategic direction of Bikes Together in alignment with mission and values
  • Build and maintain healthy, transparent, and accountability-focused relationships with board of directors
  • Assist in recruitment and onboarding of new values-aligned board members
  • Fully participate in Board

ED supervision relationship

Building Operations (10%)

  • Maintain safe, efficient, compliant, and secure operations of Bikes Together physical spaces.
  • Oversee building maintenance, security and safety
  • Ensure compliance with insurance and zoning
  • Respond to operations emergencies
  • Maintain organized, friendly, responsive and professional relationships with landlords, vendors, collaborators, neighbors, and technicians

External Communications and Relationships (5%)

  • Ensure that Bikes Together has a public image that is visible, accessible, responsive, and mission-aligned
  • Create and oversee external communications strategy including social media, e-newsletters, media requests, and general mail/email/phone communications

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • 3+ years experience with staff supervision and team leadership
  • Experience creating and maintaining collaborative, inclusive and learning-focused work culture
  • Building and maintaining transparent internal structures for supervision, accountability, conflict transformation, sustainable growth, and evolution
  • 3+ years active nonprofit fundraising experience, including success cultivating and maintaining individual donor programs and success securing and maintaining foundation funding
  • Demonstrated understanding of anti-oppression and equity concepts, and a commitment to building a multiracial, feminist, accessible organization
  • Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making and reporting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including grant writing and group facilitation
  • Strategic mindset with demonstrated experience developing and implementing long and short-range strategic plans
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills
  • Passion for and commitment to social justice AND bicycles!

Preferred Qualifications

  • Social Enterprise and/or Small Business management experience
  • Experience working with nonprofit boards
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Familiarity with and demonstrated support for Gender Equality Mechanics (GEM) or similar identity-based, equity-focused programs
  • Awareness of local community programs (public, private, and/or nonprofit) with aligned or related values and missions
  • Familiarity with “bike culture” and the current state of bike advocacy, access, recycling, education, transportation, and recreation.
  • Knowledge of Google Suite, Lightspeed POS system, Constant Contact marketing software, Better Impact volunteer management software
  • Bicycle mechanic or bike shop experience

  • Salary Range: $60,000-$65,000
